  1. Carry a valid ID proof and Amarnath Yatra registration slip at all times.
  2. Start the trek early in the morning to avoid crowds and heat.
  3. Stay hydrated and carry enough water and energy drinks.
  4. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for trekking.
  5. Follow the instructions given by the authorities and your group leader.
  6. Maintain cleanliness and do not litter.
  7. Respect the local culture and traditions.
  8. Carry personal medication if required and a first aid kit.

DON’Ts:

  1. Do not carry any plastic bags or bottles as they are strictly prohibited.
  2. Do not consume alcohol or any other intoxicants during the journey.
  3. Do not carry any electronic devices like cameras, mobile phones, etc. inside the Amarnath Cave.
  4. Do not try to overtake or push others in the crowd during the trek.
  5. Do not break the queue or indulge in any form of misbehavior.
  6. Do not disturb the natural surroundings or wildlife in the area.
  7. Do not trek alone and always stay with your group.
  8. Do not ignore any medical issues or symptoms and seek medical attention immediately if required.
  9. Following these do’s and don’ts not only ensures a safe and comfortable journey but also helps in preserving the natural beauty and sanctity of the Amarnath Yatra.

Things to Remember During Amarnath Yatra:

  1. Keep the Age Limit in Mind

Due to weather conditions and the difficulty of the Amarnath yatra trek, Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) who organized this yatra advises children below 13 years and the elderly above 75 years to not go on this yatra. Also, pregnant ladies for more than 6 months are not allowed to undertake this yatra.

  2. Pack Heavy Woolen Clothes and Essentials

Pack warm clothes like jackets, sweaters, socks, muffler, and warm caps, along with an umbrella, for the Amarnath Yatra, despite it being in the monsoon months. Don't forget to pack a torch, waterproof trekking shoes, and a raincoat. Bring moisturizer and sunscreen to protect your face and hands from sunburn.

  3. Wear Appropriate Clothing

It is important to choose appropriate clothing during the Amarnath Yatra to ensure a comfortable and safe journey. Consider wearing loose and comfortable clothing such as a salwar kameez, pants shirt, or a tracksuit while avoiding a saree as it may restrict your movement. Additionally, it is essential to wear proper trekking shoes and avoid chappals as the roads can be slippery and uneven. Proper clothing and footwear can help you avoid discomfort, injuries, and accidents during the yatra.

  4. Maintain Physical Well-Being

To complete the Amarnath Yatra with ease, it is important to take care of your physical fitness. You can start with morning and evening walks of 4-5 km, followed by jogging for at least 30 minutes daily, a month before the yatra begins. Including yoga in your routine, especially breathing exercises, can help increase the oxygen efficiency in your body, which is essential at high altitudes. By doing so, you can prepare your body for the physical challenges of the yatra and enjoy the spiritual journey to the fullest.

  5. Keep Light Energy-Boosting Snacks with you

Staying hydrated is crucial during the Amarnath Yatra, so it's recommended to keep a water bottle with you at all times. Additionally, carrying energy-boosting snacks like dry fruits, glucose biscuits, jaggery, and dark chocolates can be helpful in maintaining your energy levels throughout the journey. Make sure to pack them in a waterproof bag to keep them safe and protected. Don't forget to dispose of the trash properly and keep the surroundings clean.

  6. Always Stay with your Group

During the Amarnath Yatra, it is important to prioritize safety and stick together with your group. Trekking in a group ensures that everyone is accounted for and can provide assistance in case of emergencies. Always maintain visibility with your group members, whether leading or following, to ensure a safer and more enjoyable journey.

  7. Keep Information on your Group

It is essential to have information about your group during the Amarnath Yatra in case of separation. Make sure to leave the base camp with your group members, and if anyone gets lost, seek immediate help from the police and make an announcement. It's always better to stay close to your group members and avoid wandering off alone during the trek.

  8. Carry a First-Aid Kit

It is always better to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances during the Amarnath Yatra. While medical facilities are provided, it is recommended to carry a personal first-aid kit with essential medicines and supplies for emergency situations. This can include items like painkillers, antiseptic creams, band-aids, allergy medication, and any medication for pre-existing conditions. By carrying a first-aid kit, you can be better equipped to handle any minor injuries or illnesses that may occur during the journey.

Here is a list of essential items that you should carry during the Amarnath Yatra.
    • Your personal medicines
    • Paracetamols
    • Broad spectrum antibiotics
    • Handiplasts
    • Anti diarrhea medicines
    • Bandage
    • Small big cotton balls
    • Eye/ear drops
    • Nose decongestants
    • Antiseptic ointment
    • Common cold, fever and cough medicines
    • Allergy care
    • Anti-vomiting medicines
  9. Adhere to the Guidelines

Amarnath authorities have laid some rules to be followed during the yatra. So, they must be adhered to for your own safety and security.

Things to Avoid During Amarnath Yatra:

  1. Ignore the Warning Signs

The Amarnath Yatra involves a challenging trek with warning signs marked at various places. It is important to adhere to these rules for your own safety and to ensure a successful yatra experience. Keep them in mind throughout your journey to Amarnath.

  2. Take Short Cuts

It is important to remember that there are no shortcuts to reach the Amarnath Cave during the yatra, and attempting to take one could be dangerous. It is best to stick to the designated path and stay with your group at all times to ensure your safety and security.

  3. Cause Pollution

Maintain the cleanliness of the environment and avoid the use of plastic during the Amarnath Yatra. The government has banned plastic in the state, and anyone caught using it will be punished under the law. It is essential to maintain the sanctity of the area and keep it clean.

  4. Consume Alcohol and Non–Veg Food

During the Amarnath Yatra, it is important to respect the sanctity of the journey by avoiding consumption of intoxicants and non-vegetarian food. These items are strictly prohibited and can make your journey more challenging than it already is.

  5. Carry Oily Foods

Eating a balanced diet is essential during the Amarnath Yatra. To maintain your energy levels, avoid consuming oily and high-carb foods. Instead, opt for protein-rich foods like dry fruits, chana, and nuts that will help you sustain your energy throughout the journey.

Useful Tips for Amarnath Yatra:

  1. Insurance

Yatris who register for Amarnath Yatra by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board with a valid Yatra Permit (YP) are eligible for insurance of INR 3 lakhs in case of death by accident during the journey.

  2. Registration for Amarnath Yatra

Get your registration done at least a month before the commencement of the journey. This will ensure you will have plenty of time to prepare physically and mentally for the yatra and also collect your required documents.

  3. Langar

Langar (free food) can be found at several places on both Amarnath Yatra routes (Pahalgam and Baltal). On the Pahalgam route, langar is provided at Nunwan, Chandhanwari, Pissu top, Zojibal, Nagakoti, Sheshnag, Wavbl, Poshpatri, Kelnar, and Panchtarni. And on the Baltal route, at Baltal camp, Domail, Sangam, Brarimarg, Railpathri, and Holy Amarnath Cave.

  4. Telecommunication

Prepaid connections don’t work in J & K. So, during the yatra, you will be given pre-loaded yatra SIMs by BSNL. It will cost you around INR 230 with 20,000s free talk time and 1.5 data for 10 data. To get this SIM card, you have to show a valid ID, a photograph, an address proof, and a copy of your registration slip given by SASB.
